Lulu's Rainbow
Can Lulu catch a rainbow?
The story
As the rain gets lighter, Lulu spots a beautiful rainbow, and she wants to catch it! But every time she runs toward it, it moves. Where do all those colours come from? The friends imagine they're tiny to look closely at a water drop, and find out how a rainbow is made.
What your child learns
- A rainbow is coloured light. We can see it, but we can't hold it.
- Sunlight looks white, but it's really all the colours mixed together.
- Each raindrop sorts the light into colours, and lots of drops together make a rainbow.
- In the main rainbow, red is on the outside and violet is on the inside.
- You see a rainbow when the sun is behind you and the rain is in front.
Try it together (with a grown-up)
On a sunny day, stand with the sun behind you and ask a grown-up to spray a fine mist with a garden hose. Look for your own rainbow in the spray! Never look straight at the sun.
Fun fact
Sometimes there's a second, fainter rainbow above the first, and its colours are upside down!
Talk about it after watching
- Why can't Lulu catch the rainbow?
- Where does the sun need to be when you look for a rainbow?
- Which colour is on the outside of the rainbow?
