Tiko's Shadow Mystery
Who's copying Tiko?
Coming soon on YouTube
The story
Tiko is tiptoeing through the morning sun, and somebody is copying her every move! Milo, Lulu, Kiki and Bobo help Tiko find out what a shadow is, why it is always on the other side from the sun, and why it grows, shrinks and moves during the day.
What your child learns
- A shadow is the dark shape where something blocks the sunlight.
- Sunlight goes in straight lines, so a shadow is always on the other side from the sun.
- In the morning and evening the sun is low, so shadows are long.
- At midday the sun is high, so shadows are short.
Try it together (with a grown-up)
On a sunny day, push a stick into the ground with a grown-up. Every hour, put a pebble at the end of its shadow and watch the pebbles make a curve. You made a sun clock! Never look straight at the sun.
Fun fact
People used shadows to tell the time long before clocks. A shadow clock like this is called a sundial.
Talk about it after watching
- Why was Tiko's shadow on the other side from the sun?
- When is a shadow long, and when is it short?
- What shadow shape would you make with your hands?
