How Many Leaves Long?
Four or eight?
The story
Kiki measures Bobo with big leaves: FOUR leaves long! Then Tiko measures him with small leaves: EIGHT leaves long! "Am I four... or eight?!" Did Bobo grow? Milo, Lulu, Tiko, Kiki and Bobo find out how to measure so everyone gets the same answer.
What your child learns
- To find how long something is, lay same-size things end to end and count them.
- Bigger leaves give a smaller number and smaller leaves give a bigger number, but Bobo stays the same length.
- Two small leaves are as long as one big leaf, so 4 big leaves = 8 small leaves.
- For a fair answer, everyone uses the same size of leaf, with no gaps and no overlaps.
Try it together (with a grown-up)
Measure a toy with spoons, then with paper clips. Which gives the bigger number? Why? (The smaller thing gives the bigger number!) Then guess how many spoons long your shoe is, and check. Keep paper clips and other small items away from children under 3.
Fun fact
Long ago, people measured things with their hands and feet. But hands and feet come in different sizes, so the answers didn't match! That's why we use rulers today: every centimetre on every ruler is the same size.
Talk about it after watching
- Why did Kiki and Tiko get different numbers for Bobo?
- Did Bobo really grow?
- What should everyone use so they all get the same answer?
